We at the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre are thrilled to hear of the West Australian Labor Party's commitment to an investment of $10.4 million to expand support services for people living with diabetes across Western Australia.
Because we know firsthand, type 1 isn't just another form of diabetes. It's an autoimmune condition that requires around-the-clock self-management, every single day. The constant balancing act with blood sugar can be overwhelming, and it takes a toll – both physically and emotionally. That's why having the right support is so crucial; it's the key to preventing complications and truly thriving. Too often, most of our health investment is spent on preventable complications and "one size fits all" solutions to diabetes care.
We know that people living with type 1 diabetes can, with the help of modern treatments, live long, rich and full lives. However, the simple truth is that most do not.
This funding is a game-changer for accessibility to type 1 diabetes support, resources, and connection, giving people with type 1 diabetes the power to thrive with the world's most complex self-managed condition.
Here's what it means:
Accessible education and knowledge for everyone: Free access to amazing educational supports including insulin therapy workshops and a range of online education, available anywhere, anytime across WA.
People in your corner who get it: Expansion of the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre's peer support groups to the WA regions including the Mid West, Goldfields and South West.
Mental Health Support when you need it most: Free access to dedicated, type 1 diabetes-specific, community-based psychology services for people living with type 1 diabetes including after-hours appointments.
This investment would bring us closer to a future where every single person in Western Australia living with type 1 diabetes feels supported, empowered, and knows they have a community standing beside them.
We're grateful to the Labor Party for understanding the unique needs of the type 1 community and for taking action to make a real difference in our lives. This funding means hope, opportunity, and the chance for people with type 1 diabetes to not just survive, but truly thrive.
