t:slim users - Bolus from phone is coming!

So just to be clear, none of this is official information from Tandem/AMSL. I'm basing all of this on what Bolus From Phone looks like where it has been released overseas (hence the screenshots that are measured in mg/dl 😅).

For the most part, this new feature is exactly what it sounds like: you can bolus from your phone. It doesn't look like you'll be able to change basal rates, profiles, carb ratios, correction factors, or other pump settings. But let's be honest, 90% of what you do with your pump is bolus, so this looks like a win.

The part I'm most excited about though is that the app will automatically upload all of your CGM and pump data to the Tandem cloud (overseas this is called Tandem Source). This means no more plugging in your pump the night before your appointment with your diabetes educator! It'll just be there - up to date and available whenever you want it. Don't go throwing out that USB cable though, because you'll probably need to update the software on your pump before it will talk to the new app.

But let's talk about the smartphone app. Based on screenshots from users in the US, it looks like there will be four tabs along the bottom:

• Dashboard: this is where you'll see your CGM graph, recent boluses and other info.

• Bolus: self explanatory...

• Notifications: I haven't managed to find much information about this screen.

• Settings: Again, not much information available.

The Dashboard Tab

This screen shows you everything you currently see on your pump home screen, plus a bit more. You'll see your most recent CGM reading, your pump's battery level and how many units of insulin you have left in your cartridge, and on board.

The more interesting section is the CGM graph. With all the extra screen real estate, there should be less squinting involved as you try to decode the aftermath of pizza night! No more tiny coloured squares to decode - boluses will appear as a blue droplet with the number of units delivered.

On the dashboard you can also choose to display your time in range for the last 24 hours. If you don't want your "report card" shoved in your face, my understanding is that you can turn this on or off in settings.

If you scroll down on this screen, it will show you your current basal rate, your last bolus, whether Control IQ is on or off, and the profile that you're currently using.

Delivering a Bolus

I could describe how the bolus process works by text, but to be honest you should really just watch this 51 second video that Tandem released for the American users of the system.

Other sources online are saying that extended boluses can't be delivered from the app; you'll have to pull out the pump for this. Shame...

Notifications Tab

As I said, I haven't been able to find much information about what notifications options there are. My hope though, is that you can respond to notifications on your phone, and that the pump will accept this as you having seen them (and hence it will stop beeping at you!). I'm not really optimistic this will be the case though. I really like using the Medtronic app to view my own recent pump and CGM data, but I ended up turning off notifications for that app because it was just a duplication; responding to the notifications in the app didn't sync with the pump, so I'd just have to deal with the notification in two places... Here's to hoping it's different for the Tandem app! 🤞🏻

Security

To use the bolus feature (or possibly the whole app?) you'll apparently need to have at least one security setting turned on for your phone. aka a passcode, Face or Fingerprint ID. This makes sense, because you don't want randoms getting hold of your phone and delivering boluses without your knowledge!

Launch Date

Yeah, nice try! I don't have anything specific to share. The last estimate I heard on the grapevine was late-March or April, so hopefully not long to wait. We'll of course update you as soon as we have more information to share.
